چکیده

Sea level, currents, and ice distribution are studied in the Bering Sea during storm events. The ice and ice edge are incorporated into storm surge model. The interaction of wind, ice, and water is expressed by the normal and tangential stresses. A numerical grid is established for the Bering Sea, and a second refined grid is constructed for Norton Sound. Construction of open boundary conditions for the water and ice motion and numerical questions related to the application of a large frictional coefficient for ice are also discussed. Storm events from February and March 1982 are analyzed and compared with observations of bottom pressure and ice motion made by NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in the Bering Sea and sea level observations at Stebbins, Alaska. The influence of the ice on the storm surge propagaton is shown, particularly that of the fast ice in Norton Sound. The model reproduces several observed features of the ice distribution in the Bering Sea, including the "race track" region off Nome, the polynya south of Saint Lawrence Island, and the movement of the ice edge.

Effects of Winds, Tides, and Storm Surges on Ocean Surface Waves in the Japan/east Sea

Wind driven oceanic surface waves have a major impact on marine activity, especially near the coastal regions. Strong winds associated with winter storms induce storm surges along the west coast of Japan. Combined high wind conditions, tides, and storm surges can have a tremendous impact on the surface wave fields. Accurate wave forecast becomes an important issue at various operational forecas...

Storm Surges in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas

Specific problems of storm surge modeling in the polar seas are analyzed. The vertically integrated equations of motion and continuity are applied to the prediction of the storm surge wave in both the ice-free and ice-covered seas. The interactions of atmosphere, ice, and water are expressed by the normal and tangential stresses. A numerical grid is set over the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, and t...

Modeling the waves induced by the January 2019 storm in the Caspian Sea in order to investigate the reasons of partial damage of western arm of Caspian Port breakwater

Countries which are benefited from the sea and marine resources are trying to provide proper infra-structures to use the advantages of the seas. Ports, undoubtedly, are the primary and the fundamental infrastructure of every country in the field of marine economics. Governments all over the world spend huge funds on designing, building, and maintenance of these structures. According to the reco...

Enhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...

Incorporating deep and shallow components of genetic structure into the management of Alaskan red king crab

Observed patterns of genetic variability among marine populations are shaped not only by contemporary levels of gene flow, but also by divergences during historical isolations. We examined variability at 15 SNP loci and in mtDNA sequences (COI, 665 bp) in red king crab from 17 localities in the North Pacific. These markers define three geographically distinct evolutionary lineages (SNPs, F(CT) ...
